For two weeks now, the lucky inhabitants of the western side of Mt Etna are watching  the new eruption from the crater Voragine. It is one – and the most active – of the two huge holes inside the former Central Crater and the eruption started from a small  fracture. The lava fountains have become higher and higher, making a brand new small crater which is now going over the edge of the Voragine itself.

Since the late morning of September 30th, then, a second new activity – explosions and ashes – started from the North-East Crater. Nobody can yet foresee how it will evolve. What we know for sure is that this eruption is still invisible from the eastern side of the volcano (the most touristic one) because of the body of the South East Crater hiding it. If you want to see it, you better move to Bronte. (photos by Grazia Musumeci)
