Sixth paroxysm of the Voragine crater, now with a cadence of an eruption every 10-15 days. Mount Etna show for the summer is guaranteed and so is the joy of the tourists who are in the area in these weeks. This time the volcano has surprised everyone by making the eruption coincide with the eve of Ferragosto (Midsummer Night) , that is the bonfire-on-the-beach day, in Italy, as if it (rather, “she”) wanted to take part too in the collective ritual!
Voragine always the protagonist
Etna began to show signs of restlessness in the month of May, but it is since July that the eruptions have become a real show for everyone. Voragine, by now, has taken on a very precise rhythm that seems to have a weekly or almost two-weekly cadence. It alternates very violent paroxysms with apparent periods of calm, characterized however by emissions of small puffs of ash every day.
The actual eruptions are accompanied by enormous columns of ash and lapilli that now almost always pour down on the south-eastern side, causing considerable inconvenience to cities, crops and Catania airport – in a constant state of alert. However, there is no danger for people and towns, given that the eruptions occur at very high altitudes. Indeed, in this regard, the Voragine crater has far exceeded the limit of “highest peak of Etna” and only in the next few days will we know the new record.
Always admire the eruption with guides
Anyone who wants to admire these eruptions must absolutely rely on professional guides who know where to go and how to watch the show without running risks for the safety of people. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this spectacle up close, both beautiful and frightening as it is!
